融合了民族志研究、数字建模、采访摘录、纪实小说写作、编舞和表演,林雅莉通过虚拟现实技术重构了他们的童年。她与作家卢妤和人类学家哈罗·马塔斯博士合作,受访者重新审视了他们对“家”的记忆。这个“家”,成为利用虚拟技术重建的合成但怀旧的空间,充满了熟悉却又缺乏人味的物品和财产。

In Virtual Return You (can’t) Dehaunt / 於虛擬的彼岸 迴魂(不)散 traces the real life stories of four queer Hong Kong transmigrants born in the 1980s, for whom lived migrant and diaspora experiences exist alongside memories of childhood homes under British colonial rule that no longer exist.

Deploying ethnographic research, digital modelling, extracts from interviews, docu-fiction writing, choreography and performance, Yarli Allison has reconstructed their childhoods in virtual reality (VR). Working with writer Yin Lo and anthropologist Dr. Haro Matas, the interviewees revisit their memories of ‘home’ – virtually reconstructed as a synthetic yet nostalgic space, filled with familiar yet depersonalised objects and possessions.

Yarli Allison is a Hong Kong-Canadian born, UK/Paris-based artist with a multidisciplinary approach that traverses sculpture, digital, performance, film, drawing and installation.

As the third generation of British, Cantonese and Canadian diaspora and born in Canada herself, Yarli was raised in Hong Kong before relocating to Europe. Her frequent relocations and mixed identities have focused her attention to the collective uprootedness and solidarity of migrant demographic groups. In her works, she fabricates imagined worlds that consist of her invented survival tactics and coping mechanisms, often in interaction with personas or creatures.

在香港,有一种文化信仰认为鬼魂会在死后渴望回到原点,否则就会成为孤魂“流浪”于世间。在作品里,它被表达为一种源于内在的“复归”冲动,这种冲动企图弥合“心属”和“归属”之中的间隙。香港的政治历史背景复杂,1841年成为英国殖民地以来,香港迎来了几次“大规模移民潮”。有关移民问题的争论仍然喋喋不休,而现今仍然存在的反反复复的政治动荡,也进一步加剧了这种争论。

In Hong Kong, there is a cultural belief in ghosts having the desire to return to their origin after death – or else suffer the fate of ‘wandering’. Here, it is expressed as a phantasmagoric urge from within to ‘return’, that haunts in its desire to bridge the senses of ‘longing’ and ‘belonging’. With Hong Kong’s complex political history, including several past ‘Mass Migration Wave’ events since it became a British colony in 1841, the unceasing debate on migration remains, and is further exacerbated by the recurring political turbulence still experienced today.

Resurface is a work that documents the fragmentation of death anxiety, traumatic memories, pain, love marks, bruises, and inscription. It is also a work about transformation and healing, transforming the pain to be pleasurable. Resurface in order to heal. It is about the experience of physicalization of the intangible memories and allows them to re-surface as visible marks, be it temporary or permanent. Through the intense closeness of the visual and distanced memories of the voice, the erotic oscillates.

Wei Zhou (b.1993) is a Chinese filmmaker and multidisciplinary artist currently based in Glasgow, UK. She graduated with a Master of Fine Art at the Glasgow School of Art in 2021 and previously obtained MSc in Filmmaking and Media Arts at the University of Glasgow and BA in Radio and TV Directing at Human Normal University. Her art practice encompasses video, photography, sound, and text. She often uses autobiographical voices in her work, whether realistic or imaginary, they often reflect on the topics of senses and eroticism. She has exhibited her work in various locations such as Glasgow, London, Changsha, Graz, and Hamburg.

该片的灵感最初来源于史蒂芬·西恩博格2002年导演的电影《秘书》,其中有一段关于伤痛的台词让我印象尤为深刻:“是因为有时内在的伤痛必须要浮于表面,让你看见内在伤痛的证据才能知道你真正的活着吗?然后,当你看着伤口愈合时,它让人感到抚慰。”于是,我收集了许多关于伤口、爱痕、淤青、刺青等身体印记的证据,将它们通过个人经验视角的自述呈现出来。受到劳拉·马克斯“触感视觉理论”的影响,我想透过一系列极端、令人窒息的大特写,呈现出一种切身的触感体验,但同时保有让人能够呼吸的、纯听觉的空间。除此之外,该片的文本创作很大程度受到了乔治·巴塔耶及三岛由纪夫的启发,尤其是他们作品中“僭越”的部分,这也是我对于酷儿理论的兴趣点所在:什么才是所谓的“常态”,以及“僭越”的意义所在。

This short film was originally inspired by Steven Sheinberg’s 2002 film Secretary, a dialogue from which stuck in my head for a long time; “Is it that sometimes the pain inside has to come to the surface and when you see evidence of the pain inside, you finally know you’re really here? Then, when you watch the wound heal, it’s comforting.” I collected the evidence of different kinds of body marks, wounds, love marks, bruises, tattoos etc., and used an autobiographical narrative to present it. Influenced by Laura U. Marks’ “haptic visuality”, I used a series of extreme close-ups to create a tactile experience, but also kept a spacious, pure auditory space for the audience. The writing for this short film is largely inspired by Georges Bataille and Yukio Mishima, specifically the “transgression” in their work. This carries through my interest in exploring queer theories as well – what is the so-called “norm”, and what “transgression” does in this context.

(Tending) (to) (Ta) is a narrative-led speculative fiction film which follows an exchange of internal letters between two protagonists who imagine one another across parallel dimensions. Each communicating to an envisioned other, who exists as a possibility beyond their self-perceived boundaries of reality, these two beings meet in a shared world of imagination. In the film, April Lin 林森 casts ‘ta’, the monosyllabic sound which in Mandarin Chinese encompasses all third person pronouns, as an infinite cosmic entity with a proper noun Ta, who exists across universes and is present in all beings and matter.

The film follows an exchange of internal letters between two protagonists who imagine one another across parallel dimensions. Each communicating to an envisioned other, who exists as a possibility beyond their self-perceived boundaries of reality, these two beings meet in a shared world of imagination. In this reciprocal reach for the unknown, a world that bears an uncanny resemblance to our contemporary reality – colonised by Western capitalist constructs of race, gender and class, and characterised by a collective distance from Ta – opens a portal to another realm.

Here the potentialities of rethinking identity and the coexistence of life forms have long since been expanded. Subjecthood is recognised as fundamentally ever-changing, porous and codependent, and the accelerated rhythms of alienating wage labour are entirely absent. Daily routines stem from the interconnectedness of all beings, and encounters with the surrounding world are choreographed into affectionate, meditative rituals that not only honour these intricate bonds but also strengthen one’s affinity with Ta.

This is my first documentary short film. At first, I observed for research purposes and was curious about their opinions on transvestism and conflicts between them; At last, I started to discover their helplessness when they cannot fulfill parental expectations and confusion about how to stick to underground music culture.

两年前,我们与 Huizit 和 Jimmy 一起,在 C.O.W 酷儿派对度过了 2020 的最后一个夜晚。Huizit 是成都池糖派对的主办人之一,同时也是一名 DJ 和摄影师,她的人和她的 set 一样,充满带有侵略感的坚定和热情。Jimmy 也是池糖派对的前主办之一,现在也是一名 house dancer,他和他的舞蹈一样,看似柔软又带着坦诚。当下二十多岁的年轻人,被巨大的系统和标签挤压,无意义的日常,被分割的关系,似乎都无法逾越,逼迫年轻人缩到一个狭小的安全区域里去,年轻人还总是被告知,他们无法面对大于自身的问题。但 Huizit 和 Jimmy 在面对社会界定的性别标准和生活方向时,展开了勇敢的探索,温暖又坚定的吸纳着需要安全的归属之地的朋友们。

Two years ago, we spent the last night of 2020 at the C.O.W. Queer Party with Huizit and Jimmy. Like her set, Huizit, a DJ and photographer who also co-host the Sugar Party in Chengdu, is extremely determined and enthusiastic. Jimmy, also a former host of the party and now a house dancer, is as soft and honest as his dancing. Today, twentysomethings are squeezed by gigantic system and rigid stereotypes. It seems difficult for them to get rid of routine and handle the relationship problems. The harsh reality forces young people retreat into a small safety zone, and they are constantly being told that they have no right to concern big issues. However, Huizit and Jimmy bravely explore new possibilities beyond hegemonic gender norm and mediocre life, providing a warm shelter for those in need.

《4’33’’》是一首无声的乐曲,借此为名,我们想表现发展中的中国同志运动,TA们并不是没有发声,而是主流社会选择性忽略其声音,这更像一种传者与受者的失衡,导致话语的中空,经过多年的发声,存在已不是问题,而如何存在就成了问题。本片记录一群勇敢做自己、为爱发声的人,他们是改变的见证者与参与者,因此,影片某种程度可看作中国同运发展的影像志。

这部制作于4年前的影片,很多片段在今天看来异常珍贵,因为因为这些影像不仅是片中人物,甚至制作者生命中的吉光片羽,更是作为中国中部城市彩虹平权史中散落的记忆。拍摄这部影片时,创作团队所拥有的几乎仅是一腔热情,渐渐影像素材落了灰,但伙伴的嘱托一直萦绕心间,每每想起那些行动的日子,似乎有一种责任,就像片名Speak Out 那样勇敢无畏,这大概也是促使几年后将这么不成熟的作品展示出来的原因。

Speak Out is a silent piece, with this title, we want to represent the ongoing Chinese LGBT movement, in which the protagonists have been mute for a long time by the mainstream. This imbalance between majorities and minorities results in the absence of discourse. After years of speaking out, the key problem has been shifted from “existence” to “how to exist”. This film is a record of a group of people who are brave enough to be themselves and speak out for love, they are the witnesses and participants of transformation, which in return made this film become a video history of the Chinese LGBT+ movement.

This film, made four years ago, has many clips that seem extremely precious today, because they are not only images of the lives of the documented people, or even of the crew members, but also memories scattered throughout the history of the LGBT+ movement in central China. When the film was made, the creative team had almost nothing more than enthusiasm, and gradually the footage was forgotten, but the trust of our partners kept us alive. Every time we recalled those days, we seemed to have a sense of responsibility as fearless as the title Speak Out, which is probably what prompted us to show such an immature work a few years later.

当有人问起你的爱人时,你会因为撒谎让你的爱人消失而受到一点伤害。最终,当“秘密”成为常态时,伤口会变硬,你不会感到任何疼痛。或许这就是成年人的意义。但是,如果你试着抗拒哪怕是谦虚的放弃,即使你无法改变世界,你也能在自己身上种下一颗璀璨的种子,发现一个你不知道的新自己,你人生的转折点。

When someone asks you about your lover, you get hurt a little by telling lies that make your lover disappear. Eventually, when the ‘secret’ becomes the norm, the wound will harden and you won’t feel any pain. Maybe that’s what it means to be an adult. However, if you try to resist giving up even modestly, even if you can’t change the world, you will be able to create a bright seed within yourself and discover a new you that you didn’t know. It can be a new turning point in your life.

Mikko Mäkelä is a Finnish-British writer/director based in London, named by IndieWire as one of 25 LGBTQ Filmmakers on the Rise in 2019. His feature directorial debut A Moment in the Reeds (2017) screened at over 80 festivals worldwide and was nominated for The Discovery Award at the British Independent Film Awards as well as two Finnish Jussi Awards (Best Actor & Best Supporting Actor). Mikko is an alumnus of Berlinale Talents, BIFA Springboard as well as BFI Network X BAFTA Crew. Prior to his feature debut, he directed a number of music and fashion promos alongside working as an editor in drama and commercials. In his films, Mikko is most interested in representing the queer experience and more broadly exploring questions of identity, often focalised through marginalised characters and individuals at odds with society. He is currently developing his UK-based sophomore feature with the BFI.

It’s difficult to overstate the significance of military service for the national identity of Finland. In addition to its primary purpose of defence, the central role played by the armed forces in Finnish society is evident in the saying – that we all grow up hearing – that military service “moulds boys into men” – as if only through completing this rite of passage can a male-bodied Finn become a full-blown citizen.

Homosexuality has remained taboo in the Finnish armed forces until very recently, and it is the fear of homophobia that has historically prevented so many queer men from entering the service – as was the case for myself. Given its outsize importance in Finnish society, and the negative psychological impact of its firm linkage to traditional notions of masculinity, I therefore felt compelled to finally examine this institution from a heretofore unseen queer perspective in Service.

The short drama tells the story of an estranged father and his adult son’s reunion after the latter has finally entered the military to complete his service, following years of deferment. In the course of their meeting, we understand that, growing up, Niko has been a disappointment to his father by diverging from a traditional heteronormative idea of masculinity. In the film I wanted to examine this wedge driven between father and son, through the latter’s failure to conform to the former’s expectations – and this particularly from a queer perspective, when those expectations have to do with gender roles and expression. Viewing (the fulfilment of) military service as a measure of “manhood” allowed me also to examine performativity of gender within the father-son relationship: it’s only once dressed in the military uniform that Niko can be recognized as “a real man” by his father. With the end twist, I also want the audience to reflect on the superficial and potentially illusory nature of gender performance, as well as to interrogate the linkage of military service and masculinity in (Finnish) culture. Through Niko’s “deceit”, the film also seeks to reflect on the necessity and ethics of a so-called white lie in helping to bridge the gap between generations. Are Niko’s actions unethical if they have the power to make his father happy and allow father and son to become close again? Can his actions be thought of as wrong if only through them Niko is able to feel his father’s acceptance and love, even superficially? The film can be seen as a story of a child who, out of love for their parent (and in need of parental love), is ultimately seemingly prepared to compromise their identity and ideology – how, in order to maintain familial relations, the child is prepared to “speak their language”. At its foundation, the (borrowed) uniform is simply a concrete example of all the figurative masks that we are forced to wear in different arenas of our lives, and the various roles we at times have to take on to maintain our relationships.

Nina Bisyarina was born in a small Ural town of Novouralsk, Russia. She is one of the first graduates of the Animation Department of the Ural State Academy of Architecture and Art (Yekaterinburg, Russia). Since 2004 she has been working as a director of animated films.

Joshua M is a Jewish-American filmmaker who was born in Sacramento, CA but lived most of his life in the Midwest. He completed his first feature film at 19 years old. After visiting Europe, Joshua decided to become an Engineer and work in the tech world. A few years ago, he decided he’d rather be making movies. He went back to film school at Columbia University and is completing his graduate degree now.
