When I was searching for an idea, I was trying to find something that could reflect the inner fight that we go through while we are identifying ourselves. It was important to focus on inner conflict and to get reed of everything that could create a vision that the character is under the pressure of social circumstances. We see a hero who is surrounded by a very tolerant society, but he still has to fight his own fears, own expectation about himself. But where do these fears come from? Everyone around him is somehow trying to help him define himself, or at least his feelings, yet he is not capable of going for this feeling. So, in the end what he was fighting for if not himself? I think it is very important to talk not only about the social pressure, but the inner homophobia, stigmas that we carry inside and that make us fight with ourselves.

Bi The Way is a short, funny, and intimate animated film about Amir’s life- journey as a bisexual cis man.The film tells Amir’s story from early childhood until present day, highlighting his struggle to fit into binary culture making him unacceptable to the heteronormative community and invisible in the LGBTQIA community.

Dr. Maya Lavie-Ajayi and PhD candidate Zeinab Nobowati join in on the films historical-social discussion, providing background knowledge in queer and feminist theories to the subject matter of the film. Amir Ovadia Steklov is a Berlin based Israeli filmmaker /animator. His films are dealing with burning topics of: Racism, LGBTQIA, immigration and Jewish identity, he put them in a sex-positive framework and combined with dark humor.Amir graduated from Sam-Spiegel Film School in 2013 and worked as an independent film editor and animator since then. 我制作这部影片的动机是非常私人化的:作为一位酷儿/性恋的顺性别男性,我的性身份为我带来了非常独特的生命历程,且我一生都在研究这个话题。因此,我相信我对此有很多话要说。

作为一位双性恋者是非常奇异的:我从来不觉得自己100%属于同性恋群体,也不觉得自己100%属于异性恋世界,我觉得这些群体从未真正接受过真实的我。通过这部电影,我希望在国际上为像我这样在二元性别世界中努力寻找自己的位置的人而发声。

My motivation for making this film is very personal: As a queer-bisexual cis man, I had a very unique life·journey with my sexual·identity, and I researched this topic my entire life. Thus, I believe I have a lot to say about it.

Being bisexual is very queer: I never feel 100% belong to the gay community and also not 100% belong to the heteronormative world. I also feel these communities never really accept me for who I real am. I would like this film to be an international voice of people like me, who straggle to find their place in our binary world.

Siyuan Liu was born in Wuhan, Hubei, China in 1997. She double majored in Radio and Television Science and English Translation and Interpreting in Wuhan University for her bachelor’s degree and is now studying MFA film directing program in CalArts. A stranger who spent the first 21 years of her life in her hometown, but gradually forgot how to speak her native dialect. As a film director, a radio enthusiast, a literature lover and a wild songwriter, she uses chats and words to record life and collect stories, and then uses images and sounds to convey emotions and tell stories. Most of her works focus on the intimate relationships between people, between people and the outside environment and even between people and their inner worlds. She tries to draw a balance between empathy and rationality, between idealism and cynicism. She tries to put words floating in the air like ‘loneliness’, ‘void’ and ‘understanding’ into reality, hoping to let the audience gain the most authentic feelings of their own in the fiction construction. 故事写于2020年疫情期间,诞⽣于我在美国独⾃居住的⼩⼩房间。⼀个⼈的空虚感和孤独感,混杂着对故乡武汉的担忧,构成了麻⽊和紧张的怪圈。

我在这段时间极度地渴望⼈与⼈真实的碰触,有了更多时间去追溯⾃⼰的回忆,也希望每⼀个勇敢但⼜易碎的⼈都能找到属于⾃⼰的⼒量。

毕竟,我们好像都⽣活在⼀场停顿⾥。

I wrote this story while being alone in my small apartment in the United States during the pandemic in 2020.

At that time, the sense of emptiness and loneliness, mixed with the worries about my hometown Wuhan, formed a strange circle of numbness and tension. I was eager for real contact with people, and had more time to trace back my memories. I also hoped that every brave but fragile person could find their own strength.

After all, it’s like we’re all living in a pause.

Disrupted by the pandemic, the newlyweds Akram and Adila had to change their original honeymoon plan to Hainan and went to the north of YIli unwillingly. They lived in Brother Yalikun’s house and gained his warmly welcome. For the meantime, Akram was attracted by Brother Yalikun’s nephew Joseph. The next day, Akram left the house with Adila in a sudden, which maked Adila so confused and anxious.

米尔扎提·阿不都卡迪尔 (Mirzat Abduqadir)1994年出生于新疆阿克苏,本科就读于北京外国语大学。2015年开始自学电影制作,长时间研读电影学及当代电影理论。并先后参与制作多部国内外关注度较高的新锐导演的作品,2020年拍摄的剧情短片《Friends》入选2020戛纳导演双周,并入围第十三届北京酷儿影展等多个电影节。2021年拍摄的剧情短片《The Pet》入围第十六届华语青年电影周等多个电影节。2022完成长片处女作和剧情短片《Honeymoon》。

Mirzat Abduqadir born in Aksu in 1994 and studied at Beijing Foreign Studies University. In 2015, he began to learn filmmaking and study film and contemporary film theory by himself. Moreover, he has participated in the production of several works of emerging directors with high attention at home and abroad. In 2020, the short feature film Friends was shortlisted in the 2020 Cannes Director’s Biweekly. In 2021, the short feature film The Pet was shortlisted in the 16th Chinese Youth Film Week and other film festivals. In 2022, he completed his long-length film debut and short feature film Honeymoon.

作为创作者在我看来,最重要的是电影中每个角色身上的生命力,这也是我拍作品的持续动力所在。在《蜜月》中我想让观众直接感受到的也是这一点,充沛的非生理性力比较多。从每个角色身上的困境中描述出那些不可名状却又与每个人息息相关的微妙情绪记忆。还有就是主流社会当中,当少数群体遭遇一些涉及群体身份的不公和威胁时,我看到的是自我怀疑,自我排斥和想方设法脱离群体,撇清与群体的关系。有的甚至会进一步怀疑自己的出生、性别、性取向、身份、家庭、信仰等等。这是时代的问题,也是人的问题。受此刺激我拍了这部片子,性少数群体也是遭遇类似问题的少数群体之一,在拍《蜜月》时,我选择同性问题为出入口,也使得它成为第一部直接涉及同性题材的维吾尔语电影,有一定的地域性和社会价值。在创作方法上我通过时空的切换来寻求真实与谎言的界限和平衡点。在人物塑造方面我没有过多的关注人物的道德焦虑,因此本片的戏剧性并不强。在我看来,一个宿命论为主导的社会里,人们一般会把问题抛给时间来达到自我安慰。

From my perspectives as a creator, the vitality of the characters is the most important thing and my continuous motivation to filmmaking which is also what I want to express directly to audiences in Honeymoon. It has abundant of non-physical tension. Encapsulated from every character’s dilemma, the subtle emotional experience related to everyone but beyond language is filmed. What’s more, when the minorities have encountered injustices and threats in the mainstream society because of their identities, as I saw, they are suffering self-doubt and self-rejection and choose to separate themselves from the community and some will even refuse the facts of their birth, gender, sexual orientation, identity, family, belief and so on, which is not only a problem caused externally by this age but also from the human’s internality. Inspired by this, I shot this film, Honeymoon, whose topic is related to LGBTQIA+, because they are also facing this kind of problem. And it is also the first film in Uyghur related to LGBTQIA+ and has regional and social value. I attempted to find the boundary and balance between truths and lies with methods by switching time and space. Not paying so much attention to the moral anxiety of the characters, the film is not so dramatic. In my opinion, people tend to let the problem unsolved and throw it into the time for comforting themselves in a society highly affected by fatalism.

As the colonial chronicles of the 15th and 17th centuries collect, several indigenous peoples of America considered that gender was not binary, male and female, on the contrary, diversity was the rule. In Panama, the Guna People identify Omeggid people as a third gender, which implies much more than a sexual orientation or erotic preference. A long time ago a flying saucer, a brilliant disk, came to the Gunas lands from the sky, from which three great masters descended to civilize the Gunas. The great Masters were Ibeorgun, who took care of the men, taught them to hunt to fish, Gigeridyai, who took care of the women, taught them to have children, to sew their crafts and to carry out household chores. With them also came Wigudun, the younger brother. Wigudun was ommeggid and was dedicated to organizing various rituals and festivities within the community. Guna society is matrilineal, the figure of women is very important in this society, they are the ones who inherit the lands, and although they do not exercise leadership positions in the general congress, they are highly respected and venerated. This is why when a child is approached by women’s tasks and behaviors in that sense, mothers raise them as if they were women. Nandin, Yineth, Rosario and Débora are some of the members of the Wigudun Galu Group (the house of Wigudun, a movement that brings together the omeggids protagonists of this film).

This film brings together 4 protagonists in their intimacy, such as mothers, couples, professionals and leaders of the wigudum movement. They define themselves as a separate group and their claims are particular to their group. They want visibility, their struggle is uphill, they are indigenous, they are trans, they are ommegids. Discriminated inside and outside their community. Old Gandur sings a verse of the Wigudun song. The knowledge about Wigudun is ceasing to be transmitted and the Gandur who know it are dying. Westernization begins to permeate the Guna traditions.

Fernando Muñoz is an Argentinian producer and director based in Panama since 2009. As a Graphic Designer, Muñoz worked for more than ten years on institutional image, illustration, editorial design and advertising. As a Director and Audiovisual Producer, Muñoz owns Enlaces Gestión y Desarrollo S.A., a production company that produces institutional videos, music videos, commercial art direction and documentaries. Muñoz directed A Night of Calypso, a documentary that was screened at film festivals and won awards such as Works in Progress at the Havana Film Festival, Cuba 2016 and Best Documentary at Interntional Film Festival of Panama, 2018.

Raphael Salazar is a Panamanian Director of Photography and Still Photgrapher based in Panama. Salazar has worked in several documentaries, commercials, music videos and corporative events and videos for brands such as Chanel, Adidas or Vogue Latam. “Wigudun” is his directorial debut.

作为一名纪录片制作者,我们表现人物时不作介入只作观察,这种刻意保持的距离最终却实现了一种亲密感。这也就是我们在大多数情况下选择了广角镜头与大景深的原因:这些技法的使用可以带来很强的临场感,清晰锐利的影像风格为人物增添了一种“照相写实主义”。我认为去讲述这些故事非常重要,特别是在历史呈现断裂的当下,性别理论和社会需求更应当受到重视。基于同样的理由,我们也需要关注Wigudun Galu群体。

Wigudun is a direct cienema documentary, it shows the subtlety of everyday life and its closest conflicts. Everyday stories are simple but contain layers of enormous complexity. Our documentary is focused on the lives of Nandin, Rosario, Debora, Yineth and the Wigudun Galu group, all transgender women of the Guna ethnic group from Panama. Characters called omeggid within that indigenous culture.The documentary is going to get closer to them, their lives and their activities. For this we are going to enter their homes and their daily lives, their visions of life, and their worldview in general.

The camera will follow the omeggids as a silent witness to those lives that are torn between the struggle for recognition and the search for happiness. The daily scenes, the meetings, the events, will be recorded to present them in the documentary as they occur, with the current dialogues of the characters, many times dispensing with the traditional narration and interview.

As a documentary maker, to present the characters, we distance ourselves in the intervention of the production with the observed environment. This distance contrasts with the closeness of the final result. This is why photography is mostly done with wide-angle lenses and great depth of field. The angle allowed us a great approach and the sharpness adds to the hyper-realistic character of the proposal.I think it is necessary to show and tell these types of stories, since this is a historical moment of breakdown where gender theories and social demands in that sense need and must be made visible. The Wigudun Galu group wants to be made visible for these reasons as well.

I am Swedish American producer who won The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Emmy Award’s Peter J. Marino Jr. Production Scholarship the day I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in San Francisco. Since that day I have worked in all areas and genres at leading broadcasters, media houses and production companies in cities like Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City, Berlin and Stockholm.  

Prejudice & Pride -Swedish Film Queer is my first feature length documentary and the film had its European premiere at the 63rd Nordische Filmtage Lübeck and Nordic premiere at Göteborg Film Festival. Most recently the film was selected at one of the world’s leading queer film festivals Outfest Los Angeles. The film has just premiered in several cities around Germany.

I got the idea for the film when I was at an event at the Swedish Film Institute. I had just started my production company and had a conversation with the film expert Jan Goransson about the queer characters that appears in several of Ingmar Bergman’s films. We continued to talk about Sweden and how the film industry for many years has been very straight and heterogeneous, which has been reflected in decades of Swedish film production. He told me something that caught my interest right away: that in the late 1910s and early 1920s, several of Sweden’s foremost film personalities were secret gay, such as Mauritz Stiller, Greta Garbo, Nils Asther, Hjalmar Bergman.

With my background of having lived and studied in both San Francisco and New York, where the LGBTQ movement is the largest and most prominent in the United States, a flame was raised to take a closer look at Swedish films from a queer perspective. I saw lots of early films, contacted several film experts, and picked out small scenes that can be interpreted in a queer way. It was interesting to discover this unique material and I decided that this is going to be a movie.

Huaicun Fu, who aspires to become an actor, is introduced to Xingzhang Zhou’s acting workshop by his friend Xu Zhou. Through ongoing interactions, Fu and Xingzhang Zhou spend an unforgettable period of time together. Meanwhile, Fu gradually realizes that his recollection of Zhou is evolved from a memory in youth: he is now an aged man with Alzheimer’s disease, which causes his chaotic memories. Yunhe Zhang is a film director who once attended Shanghai Theater Academy. He received a bachelor’s degree from New York Film Academy with a concentration in Filmmaking, and a master’s degree from University of the Arts London in Fashion, Film and Digital Production. Zhang has worked in the industry for five years as a writer-director, and has by far produced five short films alongside one feature film. In 2021, Zhang received over a million funding to work on his feature film, Youth Crossing the Breeze. Besides, his short film, The Lonely Whale, was screened at the Hollywood International Moving Pictures Film Festival (2019). Another one of his short films, Find You In the Crowd,has received millions of views around the world. Zhang has participated in the shooting of several film projects and has played different roles in the crew. He has a wide range of professional production skills such as directing, screenwriting, assistant directing, and producing.

影片表达的是我对友情和爱情以及两个男孩之前感情的反思,友情与爱情之间的分界线究竟在哪里?我们又是为何需要强制割裂分明?一个偏执的男孩傅怀存,即便老了之后,也要完成当年和周行璋一起许下的梦想誓言,少年心中怀揣着梦想与热爱前行。当然,这部作品也涵盖了梦想的渴望与现实的残酷。这部电影希望会给中国的酷儿群体带来信心和希望,这是一个充满挑战和突破的故事和电影项目,是我的第一部长片电影,也是一部小成本电影,但我希望它具有社会价值,并没有在其中批判什么,而是在展现我们现在可以做些什么。

This film expresses my reflections upon a special relationship between two boys. How can we tell the difference between friendship and love? Why do we have to separate these two? The stubborn protagonist, Huaicun Fu, decides to fulfill a vow he once made with Xingzhang Zhou even in his late years: they shall move ahead with dreams and passions.

This film depicted both people’s desire for dreams and the cruelty of, for sure. Regardless, I hope that it will bring some confidence and hope to the queer community in China. Given that this is my first feature film with low budget, and the whole filming process has witnessed a lot of challenges as well as breakthroughs, I hope to carry certain social values by simply telling the public what we are capable of now rather than holding any criticism against the society through this piece.

陈熠霖出生于中国,自1994年起作为奥地利华人居住于维也纳。2004年取得维也纳大学中国研究学士学位,同年被维也纳电影学院录取。从那时起,他跟随迈克尓·哈内克学习电影导演,跟随克里斯蒂安·伯格学习电影摄影。2011年,他参加了苏珊·巴特森的导演表演特训班。他所拍摄的短片如《小宝贝》多次入围国际电影节。他的第一个长片项目《金钱男孩》入围了2012年“同根相连”奖和欧洲新人电影节。到目前为止他的两个剧本都已经得到了奥地利电影学院的资助。

C. B. Yilin was born in the People’s Republic of China and has been living in Vienna with Austrian Citizenship since 1994. He received a B.A. degree in Sinology from the University of Vienna in 2004 and was accepted at the Vienna Film Academy that same year. Since then he has studied directing cinema with Michael Haneke and cinematography with Christian Berger. In 2011 he took an acting workshop for directors with Susan Batson. His short films, especially the latest one, LITTLE PRECIOUS (2011), were selected for several international film festivals. His first feature project Moneyboys was accepted to participate in Ties that Bind 2012 and the Ateliers Premiers Plans D’Angers 2012. To date, two of his scripts have been funded by the Austrian Film Institute.

College student Muzi returns to her hometown, Hangzhou, for Chinese New Year. Her divorced parents have both set out on their own paths—one built a new family and gave birth to Muzi’s half-sister, Niu, and the other spends time with her Japanese boyfriend like a teenage girl in love. One day, Muzi takes Niu to school and meets Saking, the father of Niu’s classmate. Saking reminds Muzi of an old friend, waking up memories of an undefinable relationship with whom that makes Muzi realize that his presence is still very much alive. At the same time, Muzi’s boyfriend arrives in Hangzhou for a visit. Roaming in this city that used to feel like home but is undergoing changes at every moment, Muzi suddenly finds herself lost in her search for a place where she belongs to. Meanwhile, the new year approaches, as if nothing has happened.

Zheng Lu Xinyuan is a filmmaker and visual artist based in Hangzhou, China. She graduated from School of Cinematic Arts, USC with a Film Production MFA. Her recent essay film Jet Lag (2022) premiered at 72nd Berlinale, Forum. Xinyuan’s feature debut The Cloud in Her Room (2020) won the Tiger Award at Rotterdam International Film Festival. Previously, her short films were selected into various film festivals such as Tribeca Film Festival, First Xining International Film Festival, China Independent Film Festival amongst others. Xinyuan cultivates a personal visual practice that explores the boundaries of various media as well as of articulation itself.

From a pile of morphed memories in a deformed hometown, I attempt to dig out imageries that are both personal and contemporary.  

During production, non-professional actors and the chemistry that develops among them have continuously influenced the script, giving rise to new life to the story being told. Meanwhile, the black and white setting marries up the past and the present, kneading them with characters’ fantasies and urban dreams. The Cloud in Her Room is a documentation of the intimate murmurs inside a modern Chinese city, but after all, it is no more than a peek under the veil cloaking a girl’s mind.
