It is 2017 in Sydney Australia, in the height of the Marriage Equality debate, and the word “Love” is everywhere. But for Peter, an Australian-born Chinese adolescent exploring his sexuality, it is the meaning of love and family itself that he is grappling with, against the background of his parents’ constant bickering and his father’s aloofness resembling nothing of the ideals he sees in the political campaigns. This is when a new piano teacher enters his life and changes everything. She inspires him to find his own meaning through his passion for music.

Queer Australian storyteller born in Hong Kong of Cantonese Teochew-Malaysian background, interested in telling character driven stories that explore experiences on the margins and intersection. For many years I was a cinephile with taste for slice-of-life and subtle character-driven cinema often with a social commentary element. From that interest I started writing screenplays and plays as a hobby since it was often the only way I knew how to deal with challenging issues that I found myself ruminating on. As for many, the pandemic had given me a changed perspective on life, which saw me spend a lot more time and energy on my artistic pursuits outside my day job as an engineer. I wrote this screenplay at the beginning of 2021 and due to how important this screenplay was to me personally, I decided to pursue the project. For a few years I had some great constructive feedback on my script but had always failed to find filmmakers interested in taking on the project. But then I realised all the films that I loved and were main reference points for my film, were all made by writer directors. I realised I had to be the one to make this film to see my vision alive on screen. End of 2023, I decided to take an extended career break from software engineering to pursue this film project. And in early 2024, I was connected to Jude Ella as a co-producer and cinematographer, who I felt a strong affinity to in our artistic purpose and vision. That was when the project took flight.
Director’s Statement
For our children to flourish, is often the singular focus of migrant families. But what does it really mean for our children and our communities to truly flourish?
A story about family disconnection despite the most loving efforts, simply due to failing to see your child as their whole self. A story about the power of ordinary everyday queer visibility; how simply living openly and truthfully helps others in our communities find that connection again with those they love. A story about the power of pursuing our passions, and the profound life lessons they teach us.
I wanted to make a hopeful film to help those in our Queer Asian diaspora communities on a journey of healing, and to inspire the much needed progress in the wider Asian diaspora communities. If you want to help this film reach your community please visit:
