Water Sports

The Teacher has always believed that children are the future of all humanity. He earnestly teaches the students to nurture them well and let them lead the way. He helps them see the boundless beauty they possess inside. Jelson and Ipe—this pair of students deep in love—undergo trials of both mind and body as they struggle to survive in a world devastated by climate change. Though life is harsh and unforgiving, they hold fast to their teacher’s wisdom, in that strength of body and spirit will ultimately triumph over adversity. But Jelson and Ipe soon realize: perhaps the best way to survive the end of the world is simply to live, laugh, and love.

Director’s Statement

As a single gay man in his mid-thirties, working hard to pay the bills and build a future, struggling to make ends meet as the price of food rises and the basic needs and necessities seem to get harder to manage, I’ve accepted that life is hard. It seems to be such an offbeat thing to say. But it is pretty much what it is. Life has been really hard these days.

Life is harder nowadays even more so if we put into context the repercussions of the present to not only our futures but also to the future of the planet. It is something that is often reminded to us at this dawning of a new century – the earth is dying and if we don’t do anything about it now, we’re all doomed. And indeed, we see the effects of this on people these days. Younger couples are choosing not to have children, billionaires want to flee to the outer space, and so on and so forth make the very complicated existence we’ve found ourselves in today.

Here then I wonder to myself what is there to live for. And I ask myself, what would Greta Thunberg do? And really, how has she mustered the strength and courage to let go of the predetermined joys of being young and carefree? What would urge a child to care more for the environment than her toys? It is a simple way of seeing it. But, how can she be so selfless while all I want is to sleep, eat and watch a movie after a long and tiring day?

WATER SPORTS is the culmination of this thought and my search for life’s purpose living in a doomed world. If I were Greta Thunberg, a young gay boy with her beliefs and ideologies, what would have turned me this way? As a single gay man in his mid-thirties, my answer is love. Life is hard and the world is ending. At the very least you would want to hold someone’s hand to watch it burn and fade away. I would like to mean something to someone. At least, I can see something to look forward to in that.
