The Certificate

As the pandemic spreads, Chen Xia’s world crumbles in a single night. The certificate she thought would secure her future instead reveals a brutal truth: her lover has already married another woman. Chen Xia’s mother also threatens to kill herself to pressure her into conforming. Soon, her rival in love Zhang Xi arrives, and their confrontation turns violent. As Chen Xia falls to the ground, a chilling realization strikes her—she might be infected with the pandemic. Fever intensifying, rage surging, she stands on the edge. Will she hold on to her beliefs, or cross the line she swore never to break?

Director’s Statement

“When the world collapses, does morality still exist?” This is the central question I wanted to explore in The Night the Plague Came

The pandemic was not just a health crisis—it was a moral reckoning, exposing the fractures within society and within ourselves. This film is about the boundaries of morality. When personal faith is shattered by reality, do we hold on to our beliefs, or do we surrender to rage? Chen Xia is someone who has always upheld justice and integrity. But when she faces betrayal, familial oppression, and the creeping presence of the plague, she is pushed to the edge. In that moment, would she choose forgiveness or destruction?

Visually, I chose a stark, restrained realism, stripping away melodrama to let the emotions breathe in silence. The film uses low-saturation tones and handheld cinematography to create an oppressive, immersive experience, allowing the audience to feel the weight of Chen Xia’s turmoil.

This is not just a film about the pandemic—it is a meditation on morality, faith, and the human condition in times of crisis. My hope is that audiences leave with a question lingering in their minds: If it were you, what would you choose?
