Valeria works in a nocturnal flower shop where the plants emit eroticism. Valeria’s life takes an extraordinary turn when she encounters a new misterious being, whose mere presence ignites her erotic curiosity and desire for self-exploration. This encounter triggers a profound transformation in her, who grapples with fear and uncertainty. She embarks on a journey of self-discovery that ultimately leads to her metamorphosis.

Magaly Ugarte de Pablo is a filmmaker and photographer from northern Mexico. She studied Animation and Digital Arts, and later studied Screenwriting and Directing at San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba. Throughout the years, she has created fiction films, experimental works, documentaries and documentary series. Her short films have been screened at various international festivals, including IFFR, DOCLA, Curtas Vila do Conde, Frameline, GIFF, MIC Género, Jaipur International Film Festival, Tirana International Film Festival, Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia, among others.
In 2024, her short film “Algo Mutuo” received the award for best experimental short film at the Los Angeles Documentary Film Festival. Her second fiction short film, “La era de las plantas con flor” (The Age of Flowering Plants), received the Frameline Completion Fund and premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam 2025. Her debut feature film “Genesis” is currently in post-production.

In Mexico, we are blessed with a fantastical and surreal imagery deeply woven into our cultural heritage. Yet, mexican fantastic stories rarely find their way to the screen. Through my films, I strive to make way for unexplored Mexican cinema, opening doors to different universes.

The Age of Flowering Plants dives into Valeria’s profound inner transformation, unfolding across three planes: the external world, the microscopic realm, and her connection to nature, particularly flowers. My aim is to bring forth the unseen dimensions that shape us as we evolve as persons, depicting transformation as a tangible and fantastical metamorphosis.

This film explores how a person, an experience, or even a single flower can spark a journey, drawing us into the unknown, something we may fear but which ultimately endows us with newfound strength, a power that can, perhaps, set us free.
