I’m rooted but I flow, a queer romance flowing along the Murray and Darling Rivers in rural Australia.
Inspired by Virginia Woolf, Seasons Along Rivers explores queer immigrants’ resilience and versatility through the lens of a love story in rural landscapes of Mildura, Victoria. The film draws on the symbolic power of water and the cultural signs — flowing through the mighty Murray and gentle Darling Rivers in Australia, to resonate with the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers to reflect on queer diaspora.

Lesley Le Luo is a queer filmmaker based in Melbourne, Australia. Born and raised in Chongqing, China, Lesley’s themes explore queer diaspora, intimacy and lived experience, female subjectivity between the Chinese and Australian cultures and landscapes. She received awards such as Best Director of an Australian Short Film at Melbourne Queer Film Festival 2024, Best Victorian Short Non-Fiction at Multicultural Film Festival, and official selection at Environmental Film Australia.

作为一个目前生活在澳洲的中国酷儿，我经常驾车穿梭于乡村之间，对不同社会文化和自然景观之间的交汇很感兴趣。《月亮走，我也走》探讨了墨累河和达令河中水的隐喻和文化意义，灵感源自弗吉尼亚·伍尔夫、萨福的作品以及阿佛洛狄忒的神话。《月亮走，我也走》以酷儿为载体，连接东西方文化，呈现了一个真实的酷儿移民的叙事，用多元视角展现了澳大利亚偏远地区的酷儿身份、主体性和生活体验。

As a Chinese queer immigrant now living in Australia, driving around rural areas on road trips, I’m deeply interested in the intersection of different cultures and landscapes. Seasons Along Rivers engages with the metaphorical and cultural significance of water in the Murray and Darling Rivers, drawing inspiration from the works of Virginia Woolf, Sappho, and the mythos of Aphrodite. By bridging connections between Western and Eastern cultures through queerness, Seasons Along Rivers offers an authentic queer narrative that not only uplifts marginalised communities but also broadens our understanding of how diverse perspectives shape queer identities, subjectivities, and lived experiences in regional Australia.
