Director’s Statement

Studying fashion film at the University of the Arts London made me rethink how visual style can carry narrative meaning. I realized that my training in traditional filmmaking could be combined with the aesthetics of fashion film to explore queer culture within the Chinese context. Across centuries, China has left behind both official records and enduring folk stories, some of which portray same-sex relationships with tenderness and complexity. These narratives, such as the well-known tale of the “Cut the Sleeve,” still circulate in popular culture today. My research seeks to reinterpret such stories through fashion film, creating a space where myth, history, and queer identity can be reimagined for contemporary audiences.
