Amma’s Pride

斯里贾是一位跨性别女性，也是一名大学生，与支持她的母亲瓦利一同生活在印度泰米尔纳德邦。她与顺性别男性阿伦订有婚约。婚礼当天，尽管遭到寺庙管理方的反对，她仍与伴侣阿伦成婚，并作为泰米尔纳德邦首位合法登记结婚的跨性别女性赢得了具有里程碑意义的法律案件。

Srija, a transgender woman and university student, lives in Tamil Nadu, India with her supportive mother Valli. She is also engaged to Arun, a cisgender man. On her wedding day, despite objections from temple authorities, she marries her partner Arun, and wins a landmark case as the first trans woman in Tamil Nadu to legally register a marriage.
However, this shocks Arun’s family, who refuse to accept their union. As media coverage of the marriage sparks a public uproar, Arun loses his job. Stressed, Arun begins relying heavily on alcohol, causing major strains to his marriage with Srija.
Heartbroken and feeling hopeless, Srija attempts to end her life, but with Valli serving as a steadfast beacon of hope, Srija perseveres as Valli clings to the dream that, against all odds, her daughter will ultimately find everlasting joy and fulfillment.

希瓦·克里什以担任泰米尔语电影《一夜之间》的助理导演开启职业生涯。2015年金奈洪灾期间，他通过志愿者工作与诸多非营利组织展开合作，并制作了讲述印度废钞令和精神分裂症的纪实短片。其后，他在亚马逊Prime Video备受好评的音乐系列片《和谐之声》（由A·R·拉赫曼参与）中担任第一助理导演。《母亲的骄傲》是他的首部独立纪录短片。

Shiva Krish began his career as an assistant director on the Tamil feature ORU NAAL IRAVIL. His volunteer work during the 2015 Chennai floods led to collaborations with nonprofits and the making of short documentaries on demonetization in India and schizophrenia. He later worked as first assistant director on the acclaimed Amazon Prime Video series HARMONY with A. R. Rahman. AMMA’S PRIDE is his first independent documentary short.

Influenced by his upbringing in Indian mainstream cinema, director Shiva Krish employs a familiar genre to craft a poignant family drama in AMMA’S PRIDE, aiming to convey the universal message that “Love is Love.” The film would be among the first to invite the audience into the home of a trans woman, who’s accepted in her family unconditionally, offering a rare glimpse into her daily life. The film also captures the authentic Tamil culture, from traditional attire to local religious customs. This cultural richness adds depth and texture to the visual storytelling.

In a world where positive portrayals of transgender individuals are scarce, AMMA’S PRIDE provides a unique perspective that challenges societal norms and prejudices. The film gains added urgency and relevance following the Supreme Court of India’s disheartening verdict against same-sex marriages on Oct 17, 2023. Beyond its immediate context, this documentary seeks to contribute to the broader dialogue surrounding societal inclusion, compassion, and the acceptance of transgender individuals, resonating not only in India but also within the diaspora and immigrant communities in the Western world.
