Synopsis

Must desire to be dirty? Do angels have gender differences? Does the angel representing purity have no desire? Can’t David, who represents male power, wear lipstick? Do we have to be the same as others? In 2000, Ye Yongzhi, a junior high school student in Taiwan, suffered from campus bullying for his “sissy” behavior for a long time. His body was finally found in the campus toilet. In Yongzhi’s drawer, there was also a note that read: “Mom, help me.” Do you hear the angel’s cry for help? Dear “Ye Yongzhi”s, how are you now?

Director’s Statement

As a member of the LGBT community, I empathize with the struggles faced by sexual minority groups in terms of societal pressure and identity acceptance. I have decided to present a unique short film from my own perspective and in my own style to convey thoughts on individual differences and freedom.

In my work, I aim to explore the harm caused by the society’s stereotypes regarding gender and sexual orientation through experimental visuals. I have chosen the tragic real-life story of Ye Yongzhi, a Taiwanese junior high school student, as the backdrop. This story not only resonates emotionally but also portrays the longing for freedom and self-identity. Ye Yongzhi, as a non-conventional gender expression young individual, endured prolonged bullying in school and ultimately ended in tragedy. His death triggered social attention and introspection, calling for profound contemplation and action against gender discrimination.

Through this story, I hope to delve into the relationship among desire, gender, and purity. I firmly believe that desire is not inherently dirty, and angels do not necessarily have a gender. As human beings, we are born with our own desires and longings, regardless of our gender or sexual orientation. We should all be respected and accepted. I employ thought-provoking visuals, such as depicting David, a symbol of male power, wearing lipstick, to challenge traditional gender role stereotypes. Through these symbolic expressions, I aim to convey the importance of human diversity and individual freedom.

This experimental short film draws inspiration from Jolin Tsai’s song “Rose Boy” and the film Call Me by Your Name. It serves as a personal contemplation on gender, desire, and individual freedom. I aspire to convey support and raise awareness for LGBT issues through this film, encouraging people to understand and embrace diverse gender identities.
