Queer New Voices
Two young actors explore the topic of representation of LGBTIQ characters through the history of Yugoslav and later Serbian cinema, but also the social circumstances that have resulted in different treatments of these characters. What did the presence of queers in cinema actually mean through the decades?

Director’s Statement
Warm Film is based on research about the representation of LGBTQ characters through the art of cinema during the different periods of Yugoslavia. It is structured of archive materials, interviews, and a fiction film about two young actors who face the truth that they are going to be introduced to the big screen playing the gay character. It becomes specially challenged from them since the production offers them queer roles after one tabloid attacked the same production house for making the film with a potential homoerotical subject.
Many countries of the Balkans and Eastern Europe still fight with enormous homophobia. We wanted to make a documentary that will introduce very well-known films made in Yugoslavia and later in Serbia, but from the perspective of closeted queer motives and characters in them. Still, it is a big taboo being labeled as gay in a country like Serbia, especially for an actor who plays a gay character. Now, the history of Yugoslav cinema gets a different voice through the prismatic gay moments.
To create this kind of hybrid metafilm, we used many different cinematic styles, presenting the vibrant history of cinema. We wanted to make a puzzle of a documentary in which the audience should not be ever sure which part of the film is documentary and which is fiction, especially with the potential “love story” between our two main characters. Warm Film is an artistic hybrid documentary, telling the story about one big country from the perspective of a sexual minority. At the same time, it tells the story how it is still difficult to be part of that minority.
