Director Statement
No Law, No Heaven, at its heart, is a film about identity; visualizing and conceptualizing my own fears of making an impossible choice between family, duty, and tradition, or choosing to care for yourself and to live and love authentically and without constraint. No Law, No Heaven is an expression of exploration, viewing cultural Chinese tradition, conformity, and filial concepts of duty to one’s family in contrast to queer Western concepts of rejecting one’s family for a found family and championing of the authentic self.
With this film, I really wanted to explore the very common act of self-erasure for one’s family. Where usually we see a parent figure sacrificing for their children and family but I wanted to flip that around and show a child who sacrificed everything for their family who did not even know the pain they were going through. No Law, No Heaven is my attempt to connect with my Hong Kong heritage by demystifying the Kowloon Walled City and centering the life of one ordinary man living in this extraordinary place.
