Director’s Statement

In this short film project, I aim to explore the power dynamics of gaze and being gazed upon through the perspective of a camera. The one holding a handheld camera is often seen as a symbol of power, while the one being observed through the viewfinder is typically subjected to being controlled. Furthermore, the stereotypical roles of “photographer” and “model” carry evident gender attributes, where the female body is captured by the camera as a photographic image and exhibited in an art exhibition, completing the process of body consumption. The male body in the film is deliberately sidelined, serving as a symbol of being overlooked. Although the physical presence of the male photographer is absent, the patriarchal society he represents remains the overarching background of the narrative, casting a shadow over the two female characters.

Additionally, I have chosen to incorporate the imagery of “sparrows” and “calico cats” as a pair of animal symbols in the short film. The animal fable of the hunting relationship between sparrows and calico cats foreshadows the conclusion of the entire story.
