Director’s Statement

When we started our research about homophobia in Cyprus for our film ‘The Hunt’, we realized that homosexuality, is the worst enemy of patriarchal norms and values and that this created a great conflict.

In a country where hunting is considered a traditional male sport, a gay son is viewed as ‘dysfunctional’ and ‘useless’, just like a hunting dog that won’t hunt. Many Cypriots justify this to abandon them both. This is why we feel the need to address homophobia and patriarchy in Cyprus. Because oppressions of all kinds be it due to race, sexual orientation, nationality, class, gender, towards women, animals – are all based on patriarchy and traditions, making them interconnected and overlapping.

The majority, of the divided island Cyprus, is not accepting homosexuality despite the legislation. The ban on homosexuality was lifted in the south in 1998 only because the authorities wanted to join the EU. In the north, homosexuality got legalized due to activists ‘pressure in 2014. The level of homophobia is equal on both sides. Still today, hate speech and threats are a daily struggle for LGBTIQ+ members of the Cypriot society.

Made up of actors and crew from Cyprus’ Turkish-speaking and Greek-speaking communities, it is the first fiction film on the divided island to take on homophobia, patriarchal values, and queer identity head-on with an intersectional and queer approach.
