Synopsis

Ryan practices waltz secretly for inviting Thomas to be his dance partner, but he does not know that Thomas will leave the United States soon. An afternoon, Thomas says goodbye to Ryan, and he accidentally realizes Ryan’s secret.

Director Biography

Born and raised in Beijing, Tao Liu received her undergraduate degree in finance and went to the U.S. to study MFA in film directing; for her, film is the best medium for personal expression and visual communication, and she believes that images have a greater inclusiveness and a wider semantic interpretation. The themes of Tao Liu’s work are mainly about death, memories, trauma and bonds within families, the subtleties and nuances of human emotions, and the plight of urban people’s spiritual lives. Her stories are fascinated by the portrayal of human emotions, capturing those delicate, precious, fleeting moments and beautiful, fragile relationships.

Director’s Statement

I am fascinated by the darkness of human emotions that cannot be revealed because of the limitations of the self and the external environment. The moment when I resolve to open my heart is a gorgeous fragment of an emotion, and I use this story that happens in one day to shape a time-bound but beautiful and precious relationship. The past and the future do not matter, grasp the present moment and follow your heart.

Synopsis

Ou Yuan hopes that his new friend Xu Duo can join him to watch the once-in-a-decade solar eclipse. It’s not until Xu leaves that Ou Yuan realizes he isn’t necessarily intrigued by Xu herself but rather the character traits they share. As the eclipse occurs on time, Ou Yuan doesn’t want to just be an audience of it.

Director Biography

Tong Mao graduated from the Department of Management, Beijing Film Academy, with a bachelor’s degree in 2016 and from Emerson College with a master’s degree in Film and Media Arts in 2020. He is the director of the short film Shimmer Summer and the co-producer of the short film The Day Off. His works have been selected for Los Angeles Chinese Film Festival, Toronto Short Film Festival, Oakland Short Film Festival (Official Selection) and Redstone Film Festival (Best Story Award).

Director’s Statement

I’ve never really liked being defined by gender. Sometimes I feel like a man, and sometimes I feel like a woman. The boundaries between the two genders have never been clear enough in my mind. To me, it’s fuzzy and fluid. The film is about gender identity, but I would like to say it is more about “beauty.” Its subject matter, environment, and era are not irreplaceable. It’s just that I chose the elements that I am more familiar with and interested in exploring. I extracted materials from people around me. They’re diverse and fluid in identity expression. For me, they are the source of my exploration of “beauty” that goes beyond the surface. It is a kind of brave beauty that comes from the courage to be oneself.

Synopsis

My fear of my father from my childhood leads me to explore my father-son relationship, starting from the investigation of Grandfather’s life. I gradually discover that there is something intergenerationally connecting us all together. The more I understand, the more courage I have to unfold something I’ve never known.

Director Biography

Jay Chieh-Chun Lee is a film/video maker and urban planner from Taipei, Taiwan. After studying in non-fiction filmmaking in New York City for several years, he is now back to his homeland—Taipei to pursue his career. His approach to art starts from his personal experience and the stories that surround him, with an aim to arrive at a broader social context. He believes that by narrating his own experiences and thoughts and making films that tell stories of people, he can understand how we perceive the relationship between self and society and how we construct our point of view seeing this world.

Director’s Statement

I looked to filmmaking as a healing process to deal with the barrier caused by the fear I felt towards my father. The courage I gained in the process though did not help us fully identify with each other, still diminished my fear of my father.

I made this film not aiming for the audience but mainly for myself. The hardest topic I put in between the conversation with my father and me became a tool that helped myself breakthrough my comfort zone. The feelings for him were perplexing and nuanced. It was a mixture of love, fear, respect, impatience, empathy, and many other emotions. To me, it was not easy to articulate this feeling with words and I could only express it through other sensorial experience. So I filmed our everyday life scenes that include daily interactions to build up what our relationship looked like. I hope the audience can actively perceive what I was feeling by observing events without explanation.

Synopsis

Filmmaker Derek Ho travels back to Singapore to explore how the adoption of Christianity has changed his brother Jeremiah and his sexuality. It unpacks the reunion of the two brothers who took radically different paths in coming to terms with their sexual identities as gay men. Derek also intends to reveal to Jeremiah a secret that has been buried for the last thirty years. A Thousand Words Unspoken is a portrait of love and trauma, where two brothers find themselves navigating the space between trust, faith and healing.

Director Biography

Derek is a Melbourne based documentary director, cameraperson and editor with a master degree in documentary from the Victoria College of The Arts.

Derek’s recent work has won numerous awards and has been showcased at numerous international film festivals, and even made it to the front page of New York Times.

Series Producer Lindsay Crouse speaks highly of Derek’s work: “The film is a breathtaking combination of exactly what we’re looking for: a relevant and high-stakes story, intimately told, with a creative stylistic approach. It was a perfect short documentary to present to our global audience.”

Derek loves documentary filmmaking because it holds a mirror up to society and makes us ponder, converse and be held accountable as a collective. It is also through this process of making documentaries challenges him to shed the layers of judgement through his own lens and gets to learn as much about others and about himself.

Director’s Statement

While Australia proposes a “Religious Discrimination Bill” and Singapore criminalises homosexuality with Penal Code 377A, I want to shine light on the conflict between sexuality and religion and the damage it can cause to families and individuals.

As a gay Asian man who has struggled with discrimination from society at large and from within the gay community due to my sexual orientation and race, it had led me to an experience that was deeply conflicted with self-acceptance for a long time. I also often wondered about the downward spiral of my brother’s life as a gay man and his recent denouncement of his sexual identity, and how much of that has got to do with his traumatic coming out experience that was caused by me. I know deep down whatever happened in the past can never be reversed.

Making this film is the first step towards letting go of the guilt and to forgive myself while working towards reconciliation and acceptance with my family, especially my brother. I am telling this very personal story for healing and closure. I also hope those who have doubted their value and existence can find strength from my story.
