(The Age)、Stronger Than Fiction、RUUSH Magazine和Global Citizen的认可,最近还被拜伦湾国际电影节提名为“年度澳大利亚青年电影制作人”。

Synopsis

Francesca Curtis and Phyllis Papps are many things. Researchers. Writers. Ultra-Feminists. Partners. They are also the first lesbian couple to come out on national television almost fifty years ago. Putting everything on the line, Phyllis and Francesca appeared on ABCTV ‘This Day Tonight’s interview about lesbianism in October 1970. Since that appearance, the couple unpredictably became the public face of change, becoming members of Australia’s first gay political rights group, the Daughters of Bilitis, now known as the Australasian Lesbian Movement. The Australasian Lesbian Movement was the first forum for lesbian women to open up and speak about their sexualities. Now in the last years of their lives and with health problems looming, Phyllis and Francesca shine light on the barriers that still stop them from being seen as who they are before it is too late. With their story spanning decades and a new LGBTQIA+ generation emerging, the couple uncover their contribution to one of the biggest shifts in Australian history, and also open up about the importance of acceptance in their lives. Refusing to become invisible, Phyllis and Francesca come out for the final time whilst the country secures marriage equality and a hopeful future.

Director Biography

AP Pobjoy (they/them) is a trans masculine non-binary writer, director and documentary-maker. Growing up between Melbourne and Far North Queensland, AP’s work focuses on outnumbered perspectives with a passion for Australian storytelling. Their work has been recognised by The Age, Stronger Than Fiction, RUUSH Magazine and Global Citizen and was recently nominated for BBFF’s ‘Young Australian Filmmaker of the Year’.

Director’s Statement

This documentary started with a friendship. Almost three years ago, I had dived into the world of Australia’s Gay Liberation and my life revolved around uncovering where my queer identity came from. One day amongst all this, Phyllis Papps and Francesca Curtis flew into my email inbox hearing I was researching about their experiences. As the first lesbian couple to come out on Australian television publicly, their bravery stunned me from the moment I heard their story. Phyllis and I spoke on the phone and never looked back.

A year and a half later I was sitting in the lounge room of Australian lesbian feminist Barb Creed, searching through archive that would be used in a documentary we had started, following Phyllis and Francesca’s coming out, their relationship and life stories. As we moved through photographs, books and footage of the early days of the first Australian lesbian movement, Barb apologised for all the missing dates. She said, remembering coming out herself:

“We all thought, who are we to have a history?”

At that moment, I realised that our film was not just Phyllis and Francesca’s story, but a prominent re-telling of many women battling with their sexualities in 1970s Australia, and who came out the other end fighting today.

At the end of 2019, after countless trips, interviews and phone calls with Phyllis and Francesca, we had come up to almost three years of friendship and a completed film, telling their story for the very first time.

该剧已销往全球多个地区,包括HULU(美国)和CBBC(英国)。

Synopsis

First Day, tells a story about the fears associated with the transition between primary school and high school – but in Hannah’s case, the stakes are even higher: this year, she will be attending school for the first time as a girl.

Director Biography

Julie Kalceff is an award-winning Australian writer, director, and producer best known for writing, directing and co-producing the television series First Day (2020). This ground-breaking story of a 12 year-old transgender girl starting middle school was the first Australian series to star a transgender actor in the lead role. It has sold to multiple territories worldwide including HULU (US) and CBBC (UK). In April 2021, the series won a GLAAD Media Award (Children and Youth) which honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBTQIA+ community and the issues that affect their lives.

In 2020, First Day was nominated for two AACTA Awards (Australian Academy Awards) for Best Children’s Program and for Best Screenplay in Television. That same year, the series won its category at the 59th Rose d’Or Awards which are voted on by over 80 international judges. Also in 2020, Julie was announced as part of a “powerhouse female directing team” that is spearheading the anthology drama feature Here Out West (2021).

Julie first gained international attention when she created, wrote, directed, and produced the global hit digital drama series Starting From… Now (2014). Attracting critical and popular acclaim, it is one of the most watched web series in the world – amassing over 170 million views in 230 countries. The series also sold to and played on broadcast television in Australia. Julie was the sole writer and director on all 30 episodes of the series and was a producer on all five seasons.

In 2018, Julie was selected to participate in Screen Australia’s Talent USA Program that introduces the best emerging Australian talent to the international market.

A graduate of the Australian Film, Television and Radio School with a Masters Degree in Scriptwriting, Julie founded and is director of the Sydney-based production company Common Language Films. Julie specializes in utilizing humor to tell dramatic, character-driven, female-centric stories that appeal to a wide audience. She is passionate about authentic representation and inclusion, both on screen and behind the camera. Julie’s work explores themes such as identity, belonging, community, and resilience in the face of adversity.

Director’s Statement

As a proud member of the LGBTQI community, I’m passionate about diversity of representation on screen. With First Day I not only want to increase visibility of the LGBTQI community but to tell an uplifting story of empowerment about a transgender teenager. My hope is that this will increase understanding and acceptance amongst the target audience and the wider community, and help give a voice to those who, like myself, struggle as a direct result of not seeing themself represented on screen.

I have a personal connection to the subject matter and know a number of transgender people and parents of transgender children. However, I acknowledge that I am not transgender and, in many regards, this isn’t my story to tell. It was extremely important, therefore, to me, producer Kirsty Stark, the ABC and Screen Australia, to cast a transgender girl in the lead role. We were incredibly fortunate to be able to cast the talented Evie Macdonald as Hannah. Although scripted, this is Evie’s story and it’s our job to ensure that she has the tools and support she needs to tell it. The courage, maturity and sheer natural ability and talent Evie has shown throughout this process – a 12 year-old girl who has never acted before and who is in every scene – is inspirational.

As a filmmaker I have a voice and I believe it’s my responsibility to use it to tell stories that matter and that have the potential to positively impact on people’s lives.

Ellie and Abbie (& Ellie’s Dead Aunt) had it’s first life as a play. Monica wrote it out of a sheer desperation to see a lesbian, high school rom-com anywhere in the Australian entertainment landscape. The play had a breakout season in 2017 and after such an overwhelming response from the crowd so Monica set out to turn it into a feature film. For Monica it wasn’t just about making sure that there was a lesbian prom film out there for teens, it was also about making an LGBT film she could watch with her mum: “There are so many excellent Queer films out there that I enjoy, for example BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOUR but there are almost none that I could sit down and watch with my family”. The project screened at prestigious festivals internationally, and earned him QueerScreen’s Emerging Queer Filmmaker Award.

Ramon’s passion for dramatic structure made his first foray into long-form editing a success, with the documentary Camino Skies earning him a nomination for Best Feature Editing at DocEdge 2019. After a successful theatrical run, becoming the No.1 documentary in New Zealand for 2019, it was released on Amazon Prime in the UK and Ireland.

In January 2020, Ramon was selected for the inaugural In Dreams Fellowship, off the back of his pilot script Daddies, an irreverent take on gay fatherhood. Through the fellowship he was able to develop the script further, and was subsequently accepted into Impact Australia 2 with the project.

Director’s Statement

I consider myself a queer documentary maker and I am drawn to subjects whose experiences reflect my own. My instinctive approach as a storyteller is to emotionally led narratives that are honest, complex and often surprising.

Alone Out Here is a story full of hope, set against a barren Australian landscape in the midst of a climate crisis. It is a story about a single, gay farmer’s mission to shift perceptions around both his industry and his sexuality, and the challenges of being yourself.

During the course of directing ALONE OUT HERE, I’ve spent many hours on the phone with Jon Wright and following his daily routine with my camera. As I’ve gotten to know him, I’ve recognised the many ways in which our lives are similar. The yearning we both have for connection is a powerful thing. For Jon it has driven him to find distraction in his work, pushing him to the cusp of a significant breakthrough in our fight against climate change. It has also left him lonely and caused him to be something of a pariah in his industry.

I discovered early during the filmmaking process that Jon felt alone even when he was growing up on the farm, surrounded by his family. I felt the same growing up in an unforgivingly homophobic environment and I know the damage it does.

What drew me to Jon’s story however isn’t simply that we’ve both been lonely. It’s the power I recognised in his longing not to be. I saw how at risk Jon was and how a few wrong turns could have resulted in him hitting the self-destruct button, destroying everything he’s built, or worse.

I chose to tell this story because despite our different landscapes, Jon and I haven’t landed far from each other. And, finally because I believe that Jon’s voice has the potential to illuminate the life of Australia’s gay farmers in a way that’s never been done before, with intrigue, gravity and grace.
