Maggie Brennan is an animator, filmmaker, cartoonist, and musician. She grew up on Long Island and lives in Queens. Her animated films have screened in festivals worldwide including SXSW, SIFF, Palm Springs ShortFest, RiverRun, AIFVF, and more. Her comics have been published by The New Yorker, The Fader, Inverse, and elsewhere. She has also produced illustrations and animations for a number of corporate and commercial clients.

Director’s Statement

I have often made work that involves new or near future technologies because I sort of feel like every possible story has already been told in terms of basic “themes” — speculative fiction or sci-fi is a fun way to interrogate otherwise heavily explored ideas like love, repression, isolation, etc. On a personal level, I am a fairly Aggressively Online person and I spend a lot of time thinking about the psychology of someone like me who perhaps uses the internet to hide from or make sense of life offline. I personally express and explore a lot of aspects of my identity online that are difficult for me to deal with in “real” life (I put “real” in quotes because obviously digital spaces are real… you get what I mean!). Fantasy existed before the internet, of course, but you were somewhat limited by your own memory and thoughts. The internet is a never-ending blackhole that becomes more and more loaded with personal information and reflections of billions of people’s lives. How does that change our relationship to ourselves and the people we know?

Director’s Statement

The purpose of this story is to explain the social exposure of open relationships or polyamory in a comedic tone. Then issues such as insecurities of love, family acceptance or the desire to please everyone. Also emerge how to manage wanting to cover everything and not get to anything in a good way, which can be transferred to other contexts or different moments of life. “We are born alone, we live alone, we die alone. Only through love and friendship we can create the momentary illusion that we are not alone”, according to Orson Welles. Also through occupation. Is it so weird or bad to be alone?

Alex El Dahdah is a filmmaker and performer currently based in the Bay Area. His most known work is ÃH (2020), an award-winning short film he directed and performed in. He has also participated in several works as a performer and production designer and worked in the field of marketing as a digital producer and content writer. After a year of working in an office, he decided to focus more on his art practice and explore other mediums by enrolling in the graduate studio arts program at the San Francisco Art Institute. His work is always self-reflective and personal and focuses on themes of ancestry, queerness, identity, and guilt.

Director’s Statement

Lebanese family, it wasn’t a surprise to me to be rejected for my sexuality. After my relative discovered my relationship and shamed me for it, I felt I had to hide it from the rest of my family. The frustration of keeping it secret was so intense that it started to feel as if I was emotionally imploding. My life became a dichotomy between the bliss I felt with my lover and the despair and denial I went through when I was at home.

The nature of my story and the chain of events that unfolded made it natural for me to situate the plot in the 1950s. In my village, people still live in their memory in the feudalist system, and my family explicitly still holds tight onto what they would call “the honor of our dynasty.” It sometimes makes me feel that I, myself, born in 1998, am trapped in the 1950s.

This film is an experimental blend of surrealism and historical drama, offering a message of both love and acceptance. Malek, my alter ego, sublimated his pain through his dreams, and I have sublimated my passion through this film.

Director Biography

Yuchen Wang, a director and screenwriter, was born in 1994. Currently living and working in Shanghai. He “became neighbors” with movies in 2000 and grew up in a video store. Owing to his increasingly strong desire for creation and physiological needs, he began to make contact with the outside world and create visuals in 2013. His works have been selected for the Experimental section of China Independent Film Festival, Drama section of Beijing Independent Film Festival, Cutting Edge Film Festival, etc. In 2016 he won the jury’s nomination award at New Star Art Festival and held “Shanghai Gangda: Yuchen Wang’s visual exhibition” at the Art Museum of Nanjing University of the Arts. In 2017 he took part in the “Flooding Screen, Manual Labor” group exhibition in the same venue and was invited to participate in the group exhibition “China’s New Image: New Attitudes since 2010” as well as the Beijing International Short Film Festival in 2018. He directed the immersive outdoor music concert of the Wild Cooperative in 2020 and the band Dirty Fingers’ “The Story of the Canal” short film in 2021. His works have been shown by invite at academic exchanges and screenings of many art institutions.

The memory of first love is mostly about emotional purity and has no connection with gender, occupation, or even one’s looks. People’s yearning for love urges the so-called sense of “the first time,” the right to interpret which has for many years been the discourse logic of the patriarchy. In eighteen minutes, although short, this film tries to uphold a kind of “first love” that breaks the monopoly of the discourse.

表达纯粹的情感感受,是我创作这部短⽚的初衷。因此,我抛弃了戏剧性的情节结构,撇去了外部的现实和社会环境,⽽以⼈物和他们的情感关系作为影⽚的基点和推进动⼒,全⽚注重描写陷⼊爱时⼈的⼼理感受与变化。阿政和阿诚像城市⾥许多⼈的缩影、⼀个朦胧的意象、⼀种模糊的身份背景,意为专⼀表现他们在相爱时的热烈和思念时的⽆所适从——两种我们⼏乎都会经历的感受。视听语⾔上,我使⽤⼿持摄影、旁⽩、声画分离等⼿法,将⼈的感受凸显到极致。我期望这部⽚⼦能够唤醒观众关于爱的感受和记忆。

Synopsis


Living on a DVD shop, Ah Zheng re-encounters his memorable ex-boyfriend, Ah Cheng, and their passion for each other is evoked again. However, Ah Cheng fails to recognize Ah Zheng and already has someone else. Ah Zheng leaves with grief, but he misses Ah Cheng so much that he imagines Ah Cheng coming to his shop and inviting him to dance together. Meanwhile in the ballroom where they used to visit, Ah Cheng recalls the days with Ah Zheng, but his feeling for Ah Zheng does not increase. Ah Zheng gradually accept the fact that Ah Cheng does not love him anymore.

Ziyi Zheng was born and grew up in Shenzhen. He has graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Advertisement from Beijing University of Technology, and with a master’s degree from Conservatoire national des arts et métiers. He has since been directing films, television, and advertisements. His works focus on exploring individual emotions and experiences of the minorities.

Director’s Statement


My original intention to create this short film is to express pure emotions. Therefore, I abandon the dramatic structure, leave aside the external reality and social environment, while base and develop the film on characters’ emotional relationship, focusing on psychological feelings and changes when people fall in love. Ah Zheng and Ah Cheng are like the epitome of many urban people, an obscured image and a vague identity background. The film expresses their enthusiasm when they are in love and their confusion when they are lovesick—two feelings that almost all of us experienced. In terms of film language, I employ hand-held shot, voiceover, separation of sound and image, and other techniques to make it extremely subjective. I hope this film can awaken the audience’s feelings and memories about love.

故事梗概

某个燥热不安的夏日午后,乡下男孩阿南偶遇了一名神秘的宇航员。

尽管他们天差地别,却牵引出了意想不到的浪漫纽带。阿南在岛屿夜空里辗转反侧,回忆相遇的瞬间,渐渐意识到自己不再把那场相遇看作一闪而过的夏日心动而已。

《潮汐平行时》这部短片讲述了发生于几个朝夕,短暂又永久的浪漫。故事不多也不长,仅仅是两个男孩、两个世界,和一个火箭而已。

李兰卡

Emerson College 影像艺术本科毕业

曾参与多个长短片、综艺与广告制作,并以导演、制片等身份加入知名项目制作,包括奥斯卡提名纪录片《国宝银行》、科幻长片《北京折叠》、剧情长片《玩火》及国家地理频道纪录片《骑行中国》等。

曾于2019年担任海南岛国际电影节策展人员,2018年担任洛杉矶亚太电影节 LAAPFF、波士顿亚美电影节 BAAFF 策展人。

导演阐述

因为学业和工作,我离开家乡有十多年。再回来的时候,常常有很浓烈的陌生感。

第一次去看海南文昌的火箭发射基地的时候,我观察到了一种不平衡与割裂感。

建立在周边朴素村庄里的大型建筑,与当地朴实封闭的农耕生活格格不入。

我想拍点什么、讲点什么来表现这种割裂感。

所以在七月酷暑里,带着来自不同世界的阿南阿北,去看了一场火箭发射。

《潮汐平行时》是一场热带回忆,也是一封不讨喜的情书。

送给被遗忘、抛弃的失落世代,也送给拥有爱与关注的聚光灯少年。

Synopsis

Ah Nan, a country boy, come across a mysterious astronaut on a hot and restless summer afternoon.

Although they are very different from each other, an unexpected romantic bond grows between them.  Tossing and turning over the moments of the encounter under the night sky of the island Ah Nan gradually realizes that this encounter does not simply mean a summer fling.

The short film And We Collide tells an ephemeral yet permanent romance that happened within several days. The plot is not complicated, merely about two boys, two worlds, and a rocket.

Director Biography

As a graduate from the BA Image Art of Emerson College, Li Lanka has participated in the production of many long and short films, variety shows, and advertisements. Li has also participated in the production of some famous projects such as Abacus (a Oscar-nominated documentary), Folding City (a fiction), Kill This Love, and The Middle Kingdom Ride by National Geographic as a director, producer and other roles.

He has been the curator of the 2019 Hainan International Film Festival, the 2018 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, and the 2018 Boston Asian American Film Festival.

Director’s Statement

I have left my hometown for more than a decade for study and work. When I come back, I often have a strong sense of strangeness.

When I first visited the rocket launch base in Wenchang, Hainan, I observed a sense of imbalance and inharmony. The large buildings surrounded by rural villages are incompatible with the local simple and closed farming life.

Thus, I want to make a film to tell this inharmony. So in a scorching July, I took Ah Nan and Ah Bei from different worlds to watch a rocket launch.

And We Collide is a tropical memory, and an unpleasant love letter as well dedicated to the lost generation who have been forgotten and abandoned, and also to the spotlighted teenagers who enjoy love such attention.

故事梗概

失恋的女摄影师一个人住在幽静空荡的小院里,她的前女友前不久刚搬离这里,女摄影师总是会想起她,陷入与回忆的纠缠中。故事发生某一天,上午,女摄影师无所事事地拿着相机在院子里拍照,试图去找寻前女友留下的踪影,下午,当她一个人躺在床上翻看自己与前女友的照片时,她痛苦万分,决定将一切与前女友有关的事物清走。在她收拾屋子的过程中,意外地收到了一份不知道来自哪里的照片,这令她恐惧又绝望,于是她拿起相机,再次前往曾经与前女友一起去过的地方,找寻一个虚无缥缈的答案。

导演阐述

《不要想起我》从个体的视角出发,从亲密关系的破碎切入,去思考一个问题,那便是如今的年轻人经常会沉浸在记忆与对过去美好想象之中,当我们深陷其中时,这会带来什么样的后果,分不清真实与虚幻?脱离于具体的现实生活?追求一些空无的事物?

这部短片很大意义上是我对自我的一次否定和批判,在创作过程中,我就把自己当成了女摄影师,女摄影师身上全是我自己的影子,敏感多疑,爱幻想,矫情又病态。我深知这种沉浸于个体的自我表达和自我审美并不会产生什么影响,也解决不了什么实际问题,而我仍然想把这种状态表达出来,因为它是我真实的内心感受,我也想把这种感受分享给可能会和我有相似体验的人。

Synopsis

A lovelorn photographer lives alone in a quiet and empty courtyard, where her ex-girlfriend moved out of recently. Entangled in her memories, she constantly thinks of her. One morning, she takes photographs in the yard, trying to find traces of her ex-girlfriend. Lying on the bed and looking at their photographs that afternoon, she finds herself in great pain and decides to clear away all the belongings of her ex-girlfriend. During this process she receives a photograph that she doesn’t know where it came from, making her feel afraid and desperate. So she picks up her camera and sets out to revisit the places she and her ex-girlfriend have been to before, in search of an illusory answer.

Director Biography

An undergraduate in the Department of Film Studies, Beijing Film Academy, class of 2023. He/She likes to play music when not studying and is a Netease Campus Musician (6oo9). He/She had an abortive attempt at short filmmaking in the summer of his/her freshmen year and worked as an AE assistant in an advertising company in his/her sophomore year. He/She’s about to begin his/her junior year and is still busy trying to figure it out.

Director’s Statement

Don’t Think of Me starts from the perspective of an individual, from the fragmentation of intimate relationships, to consider the question: what are the consequences when young people today are often immersed in memories and nostalgia? Inability to distinguish between reality and illusion? Detachment from the reality of life? The pursuit of things that are void and meaningless?

To a great extent this short film is my negation and criticism of myself. In the process of making it, I regarded myself as the photographer in the film who is full of my sensitive, suspicious, unreasonable, but sides. I am deeply aware that such immersion in individual self-expression and my own sense of aesthetics will not have any impact, nor can it solve any practical problems. But I still want to express this state because it is my actual feelings which I also want to share with people who may have similar experiences with me.
