真真怀疑自己有选择性障碍。面对生活中的众多选择,她常常感到不知所措。她和好友在咖啡馆谈论着生活中的众多可能却越来越灰心。到咖啡馆便无法拒绝咖啡,真真对于画画的人永远无法拒绝。

Jen had been wondering whether she has an obsessive disorder. Facing different choices in life, she always feels helpless. When she was talking with her friend at a coffee shop about having too many choices, she felt even more depressed. Plus, she can never resist a painter, just as she can never resist a cup of coffee at coffee shop.

个人创作影片有《一种孤独》、《不存在的选择》、《犯罪现场》、《遗书》。剧情短片《一种孤独》是在北京电影学院进修期间的作品,完成于2012年6月。曾经凭借此片受邀参加2012年日本京都电影人工作坊,与来自世界各国的20名导演于日本松竹摄影棚学习传统“时代剧”的拍摄。2012年12月于日本参与拍摄短片《赌事》(该片获得Hardboiled Yokohama电影节最佳短片奖。)本片曾参加2013年8月第十届北京独立影像展,2013年6月第六届北京酷儿影展,2013年11月第一届中国民间女性影展。实验短片《犯罪现场》于2013年5月参加北京黑桥“OFF空间”的“伟大的舞台”艺术录像展,2013年10月入围@798“创意跨界中国”青年创意大赛。独角戏短片《遗书》完成于2013年7月。2013年8月参加北京黑桥艺术区“空的空间”举办的“塞姬的节奏”艺术群展,2013年11月第一届民间女性影展,2014年北京觉青年艺术节,入围2014年FIRST青年影展青年单元短片竞赛。

 

Jenny Man Wu went to the Netherlands for college at the age of seventeen. After returned to Beijing, she studied in the literature department of the Beijing Film Academy and at Li Xianting Film School. She is an independent filmmaker, feminist activist, and Co-Director of the 7th Beijing Queer Film Festival. Her film works include Some Sort of Loneliness, A Choice, Maybe Not, Crime Scene, and Last Words. Some Sort of Loneliness was shown at the 10th Beijing Independent Film Festival in 2013, at the 6th Beijing Queer Film Festival in 2013, and atthe 1st China Women’s Film Festival in 2013. Crime Scene was exhibited at The Great Stage Video show at Beijing Black Bridge Off Space and at @798 Creative Crossover China Youth Creative Competition, where it won 3rd place. Last Wordswas shown in the group art show Psyche of Rhythm at Kong Space, Hei Qiao Art District, Beijing, in 2013, and at the 1st China Women’s Film Festival in 2013. Last Words was also selected for nomination as best Short Narrative at the FIRST Youth Film Festival in Xiningin 2014.

商品社会的众多选择没有让我觉得自由,在很多时候,反而将我紧紧地禁锢其中。也许是宿命论吧,画画的人类带着天然的灵气让我无法拒绝。就算有再多的选择也无法拒绝。所以人生是没有真正意义的选择的。它只存在于你的脑子里。

The expansive choice of consumer society doesn’t give me much freedom. To the contrary, most of the time it makes me feel tightly constrained. It’s probably fatalism. Painters with natural and original spirits are impossible for me to resist, so no matter how many choices are out there, there are in fact no meaningful choices at all. They only exist in your mind.

生于80年代末的北京远郊,A型血,神经质。高中离家求学,自此开始离经叛道,与父母所望所盼格格不入。大学误入“社会工作”大坑,阴差阳错,天地渐开。现在日本学3D CG和映像后期。电影作为贪得无厌好奇心的其中之一,不否认玩票之嫌,却是认真的在玩票。

 

Born in the Beijing suburbs in the late 1980s. Blood type A. Neurotic. Left home during high school to pursue study against parents’ wishes. Majored in social work at university. Currently learning 3D CG and video post production in Japan.

这是在LXT独立电影学校学习时的一个作业,是于匆忙间诞生的一个片段,从写脚本开始到拍摄完成、粗剪结束,用了4天时间,不足之处是显而易见的。

关于“在我眼里”的设想,是在几个于宋庄和四元桥之间往返的大段空白时间里蹦出来的,我想藉此来探讨一种可能的相爱方式,以及生命的意义。

 

This work was an assignment when I was studying at Li Xianting Film School. It’s a fragment that was created in a great hurry. Drafting to the end of shooting took four days.

The idea “she is in my eyes” occurred to me while I was travelling between Songzhuang and Si Yuan Qian. I wanted to find a way to discuss love and the meaning of life.

宋庄一夜,年轻的小偷小川遇见神秘的中年男子。本应速战速决的一场偷窃,却在夜色中被不断拉长。两人漫步宋庄街头,闲谈,沉默。离别时小川将偷来的钱包悄悄归还男子,并夹上自己的手机号码,抱着继续跟男子交往的希望。没想到,男子在更早之前就已悄然留下讯息……

 

One night in Songzhuang, a young thief named Xiaochuan meets a mysterious man. The beautiful night turns a simple theft into a walk around town with little talking and sometimes just silence. Upon separating, Xiaochuan secretly returns the wallet he stole from the man, along with his phone number, in the hopes of seeing him again. What he doesn’t know, however, is that the man already sent him a message long ago…

运用影像描述两个男子相遇、漫步、分别的一个夜晚,对彼此不停微妙变化着的心情导致同样不停变化着的小动作,直到最后那个甜蜜的讯息。这甜蜜的内容只有两人知道,正如他们充满可能性的未来。

This film depicts a night shared by two characters who encounter one another, wander around together and finally separate. Changes in their feelings toward each other lead to change in their behavior, until the end of the film when the last message is sent.The sweetness of this message can only be known by the two, just like their possible future together.

正值青春期的一傑(黄劭扬饰)苦恼著要送女友佩萱(李利贞饰)两人的纪念礼物。热心的画画老师成錡(林宗彦饰)陪著一傑寻找送礼的灵感。这天,成錡突然宣布下週即将出国,并和一傑下了战帖,要一傑在自己出国前练习画完一百颗苹果。随著一颗颗苹果逐渐完成,一傑也发掘了内心的真实情感,陷入挣扎的一傑该如何诚实面对自己?

 

Yi-Chieh, who is in his teenage years, is worried about what to give to his girlfriend Pei-Hsuan for an anniversary present. A kind painting teacher named Cheng-Chi keeps him company as he searches for inspiration. Today, Cheng-Chi out of blue announces that he is going abroad next week. He challenges Yi-Chieh to paint one hundred apples while he is away. As one apple after another is completed, Yi-Chieh realizes what his inner feelings really are. Trapped in a state of struggle, how can Yi-Chieh honestly face himself?

王嘉耀,1992年生於高雄。成长过程中积累的彷徨与质疑,逐年累积为创作的土壤。在大学时期进入政治大学广播电视学系、接受正规训练後,浪漫细腻的个性成为影像风格,在毕业製作《苹果男孩》首度担任编导一职。

 

Wang Jia-Yao was born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, in 1992. Confusion about his future and growing doubt about life during adolescence turned out to be an inspiration for filming. While majoring in radio and television in college, he was well trained, and his romantic and sensitive personality became reflected in films. For the first time, he served as both director and scriptwriter for his graduation project 100 Apples.

This film explores the complicated nature of human relationships. Group mentality releases desire. The story is about four university art graduates with different personalities, perspectives and sexualities. Throughout the story, the characters develop a complex dynamic between them and search for the perfect idea of love while a party at an art exhibition takes place.

Gill Lin graduated from the Taipei National University Film Department with a major in set design. Gill is also a painter, makeup artist, and costume designer. Psychobaby is her first non-linear experimental film; she made as a fourth year student. Psychobabywill also be used as a name for her future projects.

《残次品》的开头是在YouTube上为该片所写的评论由两个声音演员说出。评论似乎是在引导两个男演员的运动,最终影响他们对自己的生活做出有勇气的决定。评论之间的对比、舞者的亲密程度要求观者做出反馈,并且找到立足点。尽管该片着重于同志群体,但是有更广阔的社会关联,比如网络社交媒体对于个体或群体的生活的影响。该片可以看作脱离正常概念人群的一种压抑机制的隐喻。明显的忍受,作为一种潜藏的控制的形式,迫使个体需要在社会允许的界限内生活,也是该片的主旨之一。

 

Comments about this video posted on YouTube and read by two voice actors are the starting point of Damaged Goods. The comments seem to guide the movements of the two male dancers, ultimately influencing to what extent they dare to live their lives. The contrast between the comments and the intimacy of the dancers invites the viewer to reflect and to take a stand. Although the video seems to focus on the gay community, it has a broader relevance in the sense that the video shows the impact of the Internet and social media on the lives of individuals and groups. The video can be seen as a metaphor for the mechanism of oppression of people who deviate from what is considered the norm. Apparent tolerance, as a latent form of control that forces individuals to live within socially acceptable boundaries, can also be seen as a major theme of Damaged Goods.

Intrinsic Moral Evil at first sight seems to be a tale of identity and growing up. But above all, the three dancers play a game with the viewer’s perception and expectations: is it a memory, a dream, a search for identity? Is it about loss of friendship or about coming of age? The layered story invites the audience to make its own interpretation. Ultimately, it is up to the viewer to draw conclusions and to take a stand.

His work tends to radiate a latent disturbance, but always simultaneously a disconcerting beauty. Most of his work is on the one hand touchingly beautiful, on the other hand painfully disruptive. Emphasizing aesthetics is not a means in itself, but a way to seduce the viewer to watch. By creating confusion and manipulating the viewer’s perception, Weistra invites the audience to become partaker and to reflect. The inherent visual seductiveness, along with the consciousness that his work evokes, complicates the reception of their manifold layers of meaning. By breaking the passivity of the spectator, his works references avant-garde theory as well as emancipatory movements. His work questions apparently rationally and logically but often culturally entrenched beliefs and opinions.

Jean-Julien Collette (born in Brussels in 1978) is an autodidact Belgian filmmaker based in Madrid. Bitten by the cinema bug at the age of eight, he promised his father that one day he would become a film director. Many years later, he is fulfilling his dream with five short films to his credit with up to 400 selections and 100 awards in film festivals such as Karlovy Vary, Montreal World, Palm Springs Shorts and Clermont Ferrand.

Laura Scrivano is an award-winning writer and director for film, television and theatre. Born on the NSW South Coast in Australia, she is currently based in LA. Laura is a graduate of the Australian Film, TV and Radio School (AFTRS) in both directing and screenwriting, where she was awarded the prestigious European Union Film Award, funding her to travel to the Cyprus International Film Festival and Festival de Cannes with her Short Narrative The Orchard.

当我第一次读剧本的时候,我产生了一个引人注意的画面:一个年轻的男孩孤独地坐在一个大的考试教室里,被空荡荡的桌椅包围着。这个故事从查理的角度讲起,我想让观众直接通过画面进入他的内心世界。因此尽管在客观上他是被他的同学们包围着,但是通过这样的方式隐喻他的孤独。这样的内心孤独和失联就是我在我17岁的时候感受到的东西。我认为是十几岁的年轻人共同的经历。

《爱的语言》中的愉快情绪来自查理寻找勇气表达他的感受。在他极度恐惧的时候,他决定把他的情感真相表达出来——对他自己,或者我们希望对萨姆。查理对萨姆的描写使我想起法国电影中的对欲望客体的描写的浪漫化处理。特别是法国电影新浪潮中把客体放置在窗户边或是其反射中。当然,在这些影片中欲望的客体是女性。因此我寻找机会来重新想象这些刻画一个年轻男性的画面。

As much as Kim’s script was about love—young, unrequited, unspoken love—for me it was also about loneliness. The kind of loneliness you can only feel when you are surrounded by people.

When I first read Kim’s script, I had one key image leap out at me: that of a young boy sitting alone in a large exam hall, surrounded by empty chairs and tables. The story is told through Charlie’s point of view, and I wanted to use the cinematography to place the audience directly in his internal world. So although in a literal sense he would be surrounded by his fellow classmates, metaphorically he is alone. That sense of internal loneliness and disconnection was something I felt when I was seventeen, and I think is a common experience for teenagers.

The joy in The Language of Love comes from Charlie finding the courage to voice his feelings. In the moment of greatest fear he makes a decision to reveal the truth about his feelings—to himself and, we hope, to Sam. Charlie’s descriptions of Sam reminded me of how the object of desire is romanticised in French films, particularly the French New Wave cinema that placed that object next to windows or in reflection. Of course, in these films the object of desire is a woman and I seized the opportunity to reimagine these images with a young man.

I wanted the moment in which Sam turns around at the end to be ambiguous, dreamlike. Charlie hopes, as do the audience, that Sam has heard him. That the world has heard him. Charlie longs for understanding and connection. He longs, like all of us, for the person we love to turn around when we call their name.
